Senate Democrat Slams Climate Change Activists Who Deny Science On GMOs

Sen. Claire McCaskill mocked the double standards of activists who campaign ferociously on the issue of climate change but refuse to apply the same reasoning when it comes genetically modified organisms.

McCaskill took aim at campaigners who claim the mantle of science when discussing climate change and the need to cut carbon emissions but deny point blank the overwhelming scientific consensus that GMOs are perfectly safe.

The Missouri Democrat told an audience at the Bay Farm Research Center “it’s ironic to me that the same group that’s pounding the table about climate change wants to ignore the science with GMOs.”

Over the last 10 years, more than 1,700 studies have been conducted examining GMO foods — all of which found they were safe to eat. A host of the world’s leading organizations including American Medical Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Sciences have said there is no sound evidence against GMOs.

“If you believe in science, you believe in science. You can’t just pick and choose depending on the issue,” McCaskill said. She went on to mock anti-GMO activists as “a small group of people making a lot of noise.”

One of the more famous faces that might be included in McCaskill’s characterization is actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The Iron Man star travelled to Washington D.C. to lobby for the mandatory labelling of all GMOs. (RELATED: Gwyneth Paltrow’s GMO Crusade Could Hit Families For $500)

In the corporate world, Chipotle had hoped to cash in on its anti-GMO stance appealing to high-income, environmentally conscious foodies who have a lingering skepticism of GMOs despite the lack of empirical data showing negative health effects.

However, the restaurant chain is now being sued for false advertising by a California women who claims, “Chipotle’s menu as never been at any time free of GMOs.”

McCaskill was listening to concerns from agricultural researchers about insufficient funding from the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Agriculture for “application-based research.”
